Literature Text

Footsteps pounding on the floor
The wood has a heartbeat
Steadily pulsing
Beneath my feet
Shadows creep across the floor
Lanky forms
Heads follow me as I go
Escaping the light
The people
The false emotions
That barely scratch the surface
Of reality
Of the soul
I seek refuge
In the black veil
That swathes my heart
And in the dark
I find reassurance
When the switch
Goes down
The moments of brightness die
And leave coldness
In the middle of the night
The hands of hazy forms
Sneaking their emaciated fingers
Along my shuddering shoulders
I quiver
They grasp me
Hold me captive
I am their prisoner
The evil comforts me
Cradles me
Shadows wrap me tightly
Bind me in endless black thread,
Dangle me over a pool
Of ink
The dreams are real
Nightmares become my sanctuary
Psychedelic visions
Arouse from the depths
Eyelids fluttering
The moment the switch is flipped
The glare returns
The moment sharply ends
Leaving me nauseous
Eyes blinded
Light shatters
At my hands
Torn fabric
Twisted sheets
Icy breath down my back
I turn out the lights.
This is a poem I wrote and entered in a Defy the Darkness contest on figment.
